Day - 2BAKU CITY TOUR

START 9:00 AM End Tour 07:00 PM
Baku City Tour starts from Baku National Boulevard which is the favorite resting place of the Baku residents and capital guests, stretching for a long way along the seashore. The Baku Boulevard is picturesquely planted with chestnut, plane trees, and palms. The boulevard abounds with modern cafés and restaurants, cinema theatres and fountains. From there, you will be taken by funicular railway to Highland Park (Dagustu Park), which commands a breathtaking panorama of Baku. From the boulevard You can also make a real sea-voyage by pleasure-boat along the Baku Bay. During such boat tour a guide will put up the tourists with interesting facts and legends from the Caspian Sea history.

ICHERI SHEHER (BAKU’S OLD TOWN)
Baku’s UNESCO-listed fortified old town was once the medieval capital of the Shirvan Shahs. Today, it’s the capital’s heart with Maiden Tower, traditional carpet weavers, bars and restaurants. Visiting traders in a bygone era often referred to Icheri Sheher as the Acropolis of Baku.

MAIDEN’S TOWER
The cylindrical tower has a mysterious story. Dating back to more than 1000 years, experts believe the UNESCO-listed Maiden Tower served as a Zoroastrian temple before becoming a watchtower in the 18th century. Follow the spiral staircase to the top of the 29 meter-structure (95.1 feet) for the best views of Ischeri Sheher.

FOUNTAINS SQUARE
Endlessly pop¬ular with strollers, this leafy piazza forms Central Baku’s natural focus. The fountains for which it is named include one topped by shiny silvered spheres giving fish-eye reflec¬tions of the trees and stone facades. And the beautiful statue-inlayed facade of the Nizami Literature Museum.

NIZAMI STREET
Named after former Azerbaijani poet, Nizami Ganjavi, the 3.5 kilometer-street (2 miles) forms the main shopping district. As you stroll through, pay close attention as the architecture changes from the baroque, neo-gothic, and neo-renaissance façades and to more mundane Stalinesque styles.

NATIONAL FLAG SQUARE
National Flag Square marks the western end of Baku Boulevard. Officially opening in 2007, the square is a symbol of national pride. The giant flag measuring 70 by 35 metres (229.7 by 114.9 feet) on a flagpole standing 162 meters (531.5 feet) was once in the Guinness Book of Records. Tajikistan now holds the record.

FLAME TOWERS
Completed in 2012, this trio of sinuous blue-glass skyscrapers forms contemporary Baku’s architectural sig¬nature. The design was conceived as a set of flames, driven from the ground up one of the main hills of Baku. Fire symbolizes energy and eternity, and also goes back to the ancient worship of this element. The tallest of the three Flame Towers reaches 182 metres (597 feet) and is perched majestically above Baku Bay. From a distance, the trio resembles flames. And at night, the exterior lights up in the colors of fire.

BAKU BOULEVARD
Baku Boulevard, a 3.5 kilometer-promenade (2.2 miles), hugs the Caspian Sea with an amusement park, bars and cafés along with a cacti garden, Mini-Venice, and the Baku Eye. Beginning at National Flag Square and ending at Freedom Square, this is the best spot for views of the Flame Towers and a relaxing stroll along the coast.

MINI VENICE
If you haven’t visited The City of Canals, Baku’s mini-Venice will give you a taste. The small area on Baku Boulevard has two large islands and smaller ones interconnected with bridges. Locals and tourists pay a few Manat to ride the Azerbaijani version of gondolas through the artificial canal system first opened in the 1960s. A top Baku attraction for a romantic evening.

TEZE PIR MOSQUE
Three years after the completion of Central Baku’s sandstone Teze Pir, the mosque with gold plated minarets fell victim to the 1917 October Revolution. Bolshevik-ruled Baku turned the mosque into a cinema and later a barn. It reopened as a mosque again in 1943.

BAKU FUNICULAR
The funicular takes passengers from Neftchilar Avenue to Martyrs Alley. Views from the top start with Icheri Sheher and the Old City in the near distance and the new skyscrapers towards the horizon.

ISMAILIYYA PALACE
The extravagant Venetian gothic palace has a sad story. Early 20th century oil baron Agha Musa Naghiyev lost his son, Ismayil, to tuberculosis. He hired world-class Polish architect Jozef Plosko to design the building in memory of his son, which opened in 1913. The baron paid for the project and then donated it to the Islamic Charity. It became a meeting and assembly hall, and is now the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences.

CARPET MUSEUM
Another first for Azerbaijan: The Carpet Museum, established in 1967, became the world’s first. Enter the building that resembles a rolled carpet decorated with motifs and learn about traditional carpet-weaving and its importance in Azerbaijani culture.

THE PALACE OF THE SHIRVAN SHAHS
The Palace of the Shirvan Shahs, the ruling dynasty for 800 years, The 15th century UNESCO-listed complex has a palace, mosque, burial vaults and a mausoleum making it one of the top Baku attractions in Icheri Sheher.

MUSEUM OF HISTORY OF AZERBAIJAN
Travel gives you the opportunity to learn about the world and see exhibits and artifacts you otherwise would miss. The Museum of History, inside an Italian Renaissance-style mansion, has more than 300,000 artefacts. Exhibits cover everything from ancient to modern history and ethnography making it the largest museum in Azerbaijan and a top Baku attraction.

HOUSE OF GOVERNMENT
The opulent baroque House of Government on Neftchiler Avenue was built in 1952 by the Soviets. Ministry offices occupy the space inside. The main attraction is the architectural beauty, especially when it lights up at night.

PALACE OF HAPPINESS
The Palace of Happiness, also known as the Palace of Marriage Registration today, combines elegance with romance and heartbreak. Oil baron Murtuza Mukhtarov replicated a building his wife admired in France. In 1912, Murtuza surprised his sweetheart with the large neo-gothic palace, another Jozef Plosko masterpiece. They lived happily for eight years until the Bolsheviks arrived in 1920. He shot the Bolshevik officers before killing himself; they imprisoned her.

THE CASPIAN SEA CRUISE
What can be a better way to see the evening skyline than taking a Caspian Sea cruise? The terminal lies in the Centre of Baku Boulevard. Cruises go into the bay for approximately one hour Highlights are the glowing Flame Towers and the sparkling city of Baku.

AZERBAIJAN STATE ACADEMIC OPERA AND BALLET THEATRE
Pre-Soviet Baku was rich from their first oil boom, attracting the best European architects of the day. The Theatre, designed by Nikolai Bayev, opened in 1911. Today, you can catch a performance or visit to marvel at the magnificent art nouveau architecture.

NIZAMI MUSEUM OF LITERATURE
Towards the end of pedestrianized Nizami Street near Icheri Sheher stands the Museum of Literature. Named after 12th century Persian poet, the building has an attractive façade with six statues of famous poets and writers.

HIGHLAND PARK
(Dagustu Park), which commands a breathtaking panorama of Baku.

ŞAHIDLƏR XIYABANI
The most notable feature of the park that stretches south from the Flame Towers is a sombre row of grave-memorials –

BAKU NATIONAL BOULEVARD
The 2nd longest boulevard in the world, which is the favorite resting place of the Baku residents and capital guests, stretching for a long way along the seashore.

Gabala was the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. Archeological evidence indicates that the city functioned as the capital of Caucasian Albania as early as 4th century BC. The Ruins of the ancient town are situated 15 km from the regional center, allocated on the territory between Garachay and Jourluchay rivers. Gabala was located in the middle of the 2,500-year-old Silk Road, and was mentioned by Pliny the Younger as “Kabalaka”, Greek geographer Ptolemy as “Khabala”, Arabic historian Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Baladhuri as “Khazar”. In the 19th century, the Azerbaijani historian Abbasgulu Bakikhanov mentioned in his book Gulistani Irem that Kbala or Khabala were in fact Gabala.

Day - 4THE LEGEND OF FLAME FIRE & MUD VOLCANO

START 9:00 AM End Tour 07:00 PM
Azerbaijan’s nickname, ‘Land of Fire’ is far more than a marketing slogan as you’ll see at these two fascinating sites. Azerbaijan was one of the original homelands of the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism in which flames were seen as a symbol of the divine. And, as though heaven sent, it was a country where fires leapt spontaneously from the ground. And they still do as you’ll see at Yanar Dag (‘Burning Mountain’). While hardly a ‘mountain’, this windswept hillside 25 kilometres northeast of Baku has been burning for as long as anyone can remember, and the fire isn’t showing signs of going out any time soon. It’s an unusual curiosity, but by no means the only fire phenomenon in Azerbaijan.

At a whim of nature, the land of this Caucasian country located on the picturesque coast of the Caspian Sea,is replete with underground sources of oil and gas that long for blowing out. Natural gas in the Azerbaijan bowels is so much that it comes to the surface over and over again. In some places, a match dropped accidentally or deliberately, a torch, or any spark can ignite the gas, which will keep on burning until it fully exhausts. In times of old, Azerbaijan was a country of fire-worshipers, followers of the Zoroastrian cult. People believed that fire sources were the manifestation of divine power, they worshiped them, building altars and temples. One of the most famous and popular tourist places of the “eternal flame” in Azerbaijan is the mountain of

Yanar Dag. Actually, it is rather a hill than a mountain, with natural gas burning on its slope from ancient times. Meter-long tongues of fire are licking the stratified earth approximately for 10 m in width, searing those who approached too close. People occupy the benches to watch the blazing hill in the evening, when the sight is most effective.

Mud Volcano: Here are 850 mud volcanoes in the world, and over 300 of them are in Azerbaijan. Most are located on Absheron, around Baku. Mud volcanoes in Baku come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but those most common in Azerbaijan have several small cones, or vents. These small cones are an amazing and even beautiful sight. Mud volcanoes are particularly diverse in Azerbaijan. There are giant volcanoes, such as Toragay and Great Kanizdag in Gobustan, Otmanbozdag and Bozdag- Guzdek on
Absheron, with a total elevation of 400 mtrs. Volcanoes are also registered on islands in the Baku archipelago. Eight of these islands, including Khara-Zira, Zenbil and Garasu, are volcanic. There is a volcano called Goturdag, which is the world’s only continuously rupting volcano; mud squeezing as the specialists put it, has been observed there for many years. There are volcanoes on the coast of the Caspian: Bandovan, Hamamdag and Bahar.
